In order to meet the publication deadline, Joseph Keppler was forced to draw the cartoon before the results of the election were known.  Faced with this challenge, he made a puzzle and hid the faces of sixteen political figures within the cartoon.  Keppler made puzzles out of several other political cartoons including A Presidential Ride through the Haunted Forest  and The Deadly Upas Tree of Wall Street.
In the cartoon Lady Republican and Lady Democrat shake hands. The faces of the presidential candidates of the 1880 election, as well as other notable political figures, are hidden in the rocks, trees, and lake. The faces include: James A. Garfield, Carl Schurz, Marshall Jewell, James Blaine, Roscoe Conkling, Benjamin Butler, William Hayden English, Ulysses S. Grant, Chester Arthur, Thomas Bayard, John Kelly, Winfield Hancock, Samuel Tilden, Rutherford Hayes, John Logan, and Abram Hewitt.
There are handwritten notes next to some of the hidden faces.  The staff at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania was able to identify fifteen of the sixteen faces hidden in the cartoon.  Staff was unable to find the sixteenth image of Abram Hewitt.
