Alphonse Mucha JOB cigarette poster, 1897

Permanent ID:

Date:
1897
Image Description:
This Alphonse Mucha poster featuring a woman with long flowing hair in the Art Nouveau style was designed as advertisement for the JOB cigarette company. In the early 1900s, the Plastic Club raised money for its new building by holding various events, ranging from art auctions to card parties. One notable fundraiser was a lecture given by Alphonse Mucha. Mucha was born in Moravia (now the Czech Republic) and later immigrated to Paris where he began painting large advertisement posters featuring beautiful women in flowing robes. His posters were unique, and his "Mucha style," later known as Art Nouveau, became a sensation in Paris. Most likely, Mucha gave the JOB poster to the Plastic Club at the time of his lecture.
