Image: 1/9 plate; Overpainted image of seated young man wearing a Civil War cap looking down at an unidentified object, with posing stand clearly in view.
Preserver: Fancier with inward points at the corners (after 1858).
Mat: Oval with matte finish and ornate (late 1850s).
Case: Paper-covered wood-frame with scarce patriotic "Star and Shield" design (Berg No. 4-72), with a red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion embossed with a geometric design (1850-60s).
