Image: 1/6 plate; Two women, the elder woman wearing a daycap set back on the head and strings tied to one side, and a dark gown, probably black, with white undersleeves, and dark leather gloves, younger woman wears her hair parted at the center, smoothed at the sides, with ringlets to below the ears, and a dress cut in a habit-front style to display the white chemisette with lace collar and open, frilled undersleeves, she also wears a bracelet which may be hair jewelry, and 2 rings on her fingers, with a fur shawl held around her torso; both women have color applied to their cheeks. Preserver: Straight, narrow, embossed with simple pattern (after 1850). Mat: Oval with matte finish (ca.1850). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame half case with embossed geometric design and gilded pattern on both exterior and interior, with red velvet pinchpad. Note: The unidentified woman on the left may be Mrs. Henry D. Gilpin (see Record Number 5799)
