Harriet Chevery and J. J. Neff daguerreotype, 1850

Image Description:
Image: 1/4 plate; Man and woman seated side by side; man's one arm behind the woman, other hand clasps unidentified object on his lap, dressed in a dark jacket and vest, with a white shirt with the collar folded down over a dark tie, and a gilded spot on his shirt; woman with hair parted in the center covering the tops of her ears, wearing a dark dress buttoned at the front, with long sleeves cuffed at the wrist, and knitted silk mitts, a white collar with a gilded brooch clasped at her throat; color applied to both their cheeks and to the pupils of the man's eyes. Preserver: [none] (pre-1847). Mat: Double elliptical, with sandy finish (mid 1840-50). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a bird on a branch design on the front with a plain back, red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion embossed with a floral design (ca. 1850).
Inscription:
(ink on paper): This is J. J. Neff with / his 1/2 - sister (daughter of Katerina / Neff) Harriet who married / a Chevery. There may be / living descendants of hers. He / married Marianne Levis and / had 5 children: Dorothy, Catherine, / my great grandmother (d. Aug 1, 1901), / Henry, 2 boys named Christian after / the elder died in infancy. Only / Catherine lived to maturity. (Enclosed note)
