Image: 1/4 plate; man standing beside a seated woman; man with hair parted on one side and covering half his ear, dressed in a dark jacked with a high back collar, dark trousers, and a dark vest, with a white shirt, high white collar with points turned down, and a dark bow tie, holding a top hat in one hand, the other placed behind the woman, whose hair is parted in the center, in a padded wings style softened by very short ringlets in front of the ears, wearing a dress of habit-front style, which displays the chemisette, trimmed with rows of tucks or covered cord, with long belled sleeves, a whitework collar, and open, frilled undersleeves, wearing earrings, a brooch at her throat, a pencil around her neck, and a ring on her finger, color applied to both their cheeks and lips.
Preserver: [none] (pre-1847).
Mat: Oval with matte finish and simple embossed design (1850).
Case: Paper-covered wood-frame embossed with a floral design on the front and a geometric design on the back, with a red velvet pinchpad and a plain (unembossed) red velvet cushion (1850-60s).
