Image: 1/2 plate; Seated woman with arm resting on posing table, dressed in a black dress shirred low at the front with unpressed pleats running back over the shoulders, gathers at the collarbone, and long sleeves cuffed at the wrist, a black shawl draped over her arms, with a wide sheer white collar, and a sheer white daycap tied under her chin, holding a book on her lap, color applied to her cheeks. Preserver: [none] (pre-1847). Mat: Octagonal with uncommon matte finish embossed overall in a simple geometric pattern ( early 1850s). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a floral design on the front and unembossed on the back, with an eggplant purple pinchpad and plain (unembossed) cushion (1845-50).
