Image: 1/6 plate; Seated woman, with hair parted in the center with heavy side wings looped to a point low on the crown at the back and widened over the ears, wearing a dark silk gown featuring a cadet bodice buttoned at the throat but open in front to display the chemisette, with a whitework collar closed with a brooch, narrow belled sleeves under long closely fitted caps, with a long gilded chain around her neck, and long drop earrings, color applied to her cheeks and mouth. Preserver: Stiff & heavy, more golden (1847-50). Mat: Oval with sandy finish (late 1840s). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a scarce Bird and Grapes (Berg No. 5-33) design on the front, and a geometric design on the back, with a red velvet pinchpad, and a plum purple cushion embossed with a floral design (ca. 1850).
