Image: 1/6 plate; Seated woman with face in profile, hair parted in the center, covering the ears, and pulled back into a bun, wearing a long sleeved black dress covered by a black shawl or pelerine, with a small upright white collar, a brooch clasped at her throat, holding a deceased baby on her lap, wearing a long white dress and white cap, draped in black cloth, color applied to their faces and hands.
Preserver: Stiff & heavy, more golden (1847-50).
Mat: Oval with matte finish and simple embossed design (1850).
Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a simple lined edge trim both front and back exterior, with a red velvet pinchpad and a plain (unembossed) red velvet cushion (ca. 1850).
