Image Description:
Image: 1/9 plate; Head and shoulders of a man wearing a dark jacket with a white pocket square, a white vest, and a white shirt with gilded buttons, a dark bow tie and turned down collar, hair parted on one side and puffed over the forehead, a mustache, and color applied to his cheeks. Preserver: Fancier with inward points at the corners (after 1858). Mat: Ornate elliptical (also called 'acorn') with ornate matte finish (late 1840s). Case: Paper-covered wood frame embossed with a geometric design both front and back, with a red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion embossed with a floral design (1850-60s).
