Image Description:
Image: 1/6 plate on red ruby glass; Seated woman with hair parted in the center and smoothed behind her ears, with arm resting on a cloth-covered posing table, and holding a book in the other hand on her lap, wearing a dress made of a striped fabric, belted at the waist, with large belled sleeves over full sheer striped white undersleeves cuffed at the wrists, the dress trimmed on the sleeves, the epaulettes, and around the neckline, with drop earrings, watch chain around her neck, and brooch at her throat all gilded. Preserver: Fancier with inward points at the corners (after 1858). Mat: Oval with matte finish and ornate (late 1850s). Case: Paper covered wood frame embossed with a floral and scroll work design both front and back, with a red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion embossed with a floral design (1850-60s).
