Photograph shows students and their teacher looking on as John Wintersteen, Jr. raises the American Flag on Memorial Day in front of William Penn Charter School (Penn Charter).  Penn Charter is an independent school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania that was founded in 1689 by William Penn.  Penn Charter is the oldest Quaker school in the world and one of the first schools to open its doors to all students no matter their religion, race, or gender.  Today, Penn Charter is home to hundreds of children from all cultures, faiths, and means. 

From original image caption: "Ten-year-old John Wintersteen, Jr., raised the flag yesterday at Memorial Day exercises at Penn Charter School. The banner was a gift to the school by the boy's parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Wintersteen, 8440 St. Martin's la., Chestnut Hill."
