Axel Boëthius, son of Essie Sahlin Boëthius and Simon Johannes Boëthius, was the first director of the Swedish Institute in Rome, founded in 1926. He split his time between Sweden and Rome, working as a professor of archeology and president of the University of Gothenburg. In 1951 he permanently moved to Rome, where he lived until his death in 1969.
