Photograph of Gustav Oberlaender (1867-1936) presumably taken in Heidelberg, Germany. Born in Düren, Rhenish Prussia in 1867, Gustav Oberlaender emigrated to the United States in 1888 and began an entrepreneurial career in various import-export businesses. Along with his fellow immigrants Ferdinand Thun and Henry Janssen, Oberlaender eventually distinguished himself in the hoisery industry by using skills acquired in Germany to establish textile machinery and hosiery firms in the United States. Oberlaender was also renowned for his philanthrophy, in particular the Oberlaender Trust, which sent intellectuals between Germany and the United States in the interest of promoting transatlantic understanding.
