Biography:
Violet Oakley was an American illustrator and muralist, and was the first American woman to receive a public mural commission. She attended Drexel University for illustration, learning under Howard Pyle, and was close with Elizabeth Shippen Green and Jessie Wilcox Smith. Her murals can be seen in the Pennsylvania Senate and Supreme Court.
