Outgrowth of the Philadelphia Almshouse, erected in 1731 or 1732; name Philadelphia Hospital officially adopted in 1834, but the Almshouse and Hospital continued to be located together in Blockley Township until Mar. 29, 1920, when the Almshouse moved to Holmesburg; name Philadelphia General Hospital adopted in 1902; became Philadelphia General Hospital (Blockley Division) in 1953
