Biography:

b. Oct. 2, 1833 in Detroit, MI, arrived at Norte Dame 1853; became novitiate in 1857 and took final vows of priesthood three years later; 1861 appointed chaplain of the 88th New York Volunteer Infantry in the Irish Brigade; 1864 resigned his commission and returned to Notre Dame; became the University’s 3rd president; d. Dec. 28, 1897
