The Philadelphia Evening Telegraph was founded in 1864 by Charles Edward Warburton and James Barclay Harding.  After Harding’s death in October 1865, Warburton became the sole proprietor. Former Telegraph reporter and city editor, Watson Armbruster, served as managing editor. The Telegraph was an innovative newspaper that ran editorials from other leading newspapers in a feature called “Spirit of the Press.” Warburton died on September 1, 1896, and his son, Barclay Harding Warburton, inherited the newspaper. On February 2, 1911, Warburton sold the paper to Rodman Wanamaker, the son of John Wanamaker. The Telegraph ceased publication on June 28, 1918
