Biography:
Marcus Antonius or Mark Antony was born circa 83 BCE and died August 30 BCE in Alexandria, Egypt.  He was a Roman general and triumvir.  The political cartoon “The Man that Blocks up the Highway” mentions Mark Antony and his role in the demise of the Roman Republic and the rise of the Roman Empire.
Antony supported Julius Caesar during the Civil War (49-45 BCE) and was a general during the conquest of Gaul. Caesar won the Civil War and was proclaimed dictator.  After Caesar’s assassination in 44 BCE, Antony formed a political alliance or second triumvirate with Marcus Aemilius Lepidus and Octavian.  In 31BCE the political tension between Antony and Octavian led to a civil war which ended the Roman Republic.  After his defeat, Antony committed suicide in August 30 BCE.  In 27 BCE Octavian took the title Augustus and became the first emperor of the Roman Empire.
