The son of a Revolutionary War general, Thomas Cadwalader distinguished himself as a successful attorney and military officer of the early nineteenth century. Practicing law in Philadelphia, Cadwalader served a prominent clientele including the Penn family and their extended interests in Pennsylvania. He also was a trustee to the Bank of the United States. Prior to his admission in 1801 to the bar, the nineteen-year-old Cadwalader joined the First City Troop Cavalry and took part in the Whiskey Insurrection of 1799. He attained the rank of captain in 1809 and then regimental lieutenant colonel and commanding officer. During the War of 1812, he served on Philadelphia’s Committee of Defense and in the field at camps at Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, and Wilmington, Delaware. In early 1815, he was in temporary command of U.S. military forces in Delaware, eastern Pennsylvania, and parts of New Jersey and Maryland.Cadwalader eloped with Mary Biddle (1781-1850) in 1804. His mother opposed the match due to a family grudge against Mary’s father, Clement Biddle. Despite the opposition, Thomas and Mary’s union endured and grew to a family of five sons.
