Engraving of Reverend John Gloucester, Pastor of the First African Presyterian Church in Philadelphia. Born a slave in eastern Tennessee, Gloucester was bought by a white Presbytarian minister and was trained as his personal servant after moving to Philadelphia. Gloucester was eventually ordained by the Presbytary in Tennessee and gained freedom for himself and his family.
