This folder contains former volume 4, pages 76 to 140 of the extra illustrated version of John Galt's The Life, Studies and Works of Benjamin West. It contains letters to and from West concerning the Royal Academy of Arts, personal correspondences, a proposal from West to the Directors of Greenwich Hospital, a copy of a paper West read to King George III, and prints of notable contemporaries and landscapes. Most dated items are between 1790 and 1815. Oversize pages are in box 3, folder 5.John Galt wrote two volumes covering the life of Benjamin West. The first was published in 1816 and contains biographical information from West’s birth to his travels in Italy in the 1760s. The second volume contains West’s move to London and his subsequent career as historical painter to King George III, and ends with West’s death in 1820.
