Known officially as the 67th New York Infantry, the First Long Island Volunteers were raised in Brooklyn in 1861. The recruits were predominantly Irish-born.Edmund K. Russell became commanding officer of Companky K in 1863 as 1st Lieutenant, he was eventually promoted to Captian and then he finished the war as a Major.
This digital record contains thirty-six images of sixteen letters written by Edmund K. Russell during and just after the Civil War. He wrote to other commanders but also to the Ordinance Office, Treasury Department, and Quartermaster's General's Office. This record pulls from folders 2 (titled as, "Millitary: Long Island Volunteers, 1st Regiment, Co. K -- Returns, etc., 1863-64") and 3 (titled as, "Millitary: Long Island Volunteers, 1st Regiment, Co. K -- Returns, etc., 1864-65"). Together these selected images represent all of Russell's outgoing correspondence held in the Historical Society of Pennsylvania Civil War papers.
