Image Description:
Known officially as the 67th New York Infantry, the 1st Long Island Volunteers were raised in Brooklyn in 1861. The recruits were predominantly Irish-born.

Edmund K. Russell became commanding officer of Companky K in 1863 as 1st Lieutenant, he was eventually promoted to Captian and then he finished the war as a Major.

This digital record contains twelve images of six letters sent from the Treasury Department to Edmund K. Russell during and just after the Civil War. The letters represented in this digital record are from folders 2 (titled as, "Millitary: Long Island Volunteers, 1st Regiment, Co. K -- Returns, etc., 1863-64") and 3 (titled as, "Millitary: Long Island Volunteers, 1st Regiment, Co. K -- Returns, etc., 1864-65"). Together these selected images represent all of the Treasury Department correspondence to the 1st Lonf Island Volunteers held in the Historical Society of Pennsylvania Civil War papers.
