"K & A" (Kensington and Allegheny aves.) is Kensington's "Times Square," sometimes called the crossroads of the Northeast. Strangely enough, the busy corner, now the heart of Kensington, was outside the original district bearing the name (taken from the suburb of London). The original Kensington centered about what is now "Fishtown." Gradually spreading north-ward it now embraces the old borough Aramingo (Indian name for a nearby creek, now gone). Other neighborhood names: Harrowgate, Cooperville, "Gingerpop Row," "Devil's Pocket," "Little California." The completen of the Elevated harmed, rather than helped Kensington. It stimulated the growth of the communities to the north. (On reverse)
