(1) Photograph depicts two U.S. servicemen preparing a weather balloon that would provide valuable weather data for air and surface crafts in World War II.  Weather balloons were utilized to observe, track, and investigate atmospheric phenomena.  Aerologist’s were able to interpreted forecasts from the meteorological data gathered by the balloons.

Guadalcanal, S.I.—A U.S. Navy aerologist dressed briefly and comfortably for the climate on Guadalcanal Island, prepares to send aloft a balloon which will provide valuable information for air and surface craft in their attacks of the Japs.  Accurate weather data is a valuable weapon in these parts. A U.S. Marine sergeant is shown turning on the “juice” from a gas cylinder.
