Inscription:
Old Market House at the head of Dock creek built in 1702. The upper floor was used part as the City Watch House and Lock Up. Also a general store room for city purposes tool rooms, etc. this building was paralel with 4th Street, east of it, between between Chestnut and Market Streets and Franklin Place and Fourth St. After the Indian Queen Hotel was built, part of the market on the south end was torn down and the middle & northern portion was used as their stables, afterwards the northern, then the middle portion & lastly the Indian Queen was demolished to erect stores on 4th St. A small portion remained in 1857 as a carpenter shop occupied by a very old man who was born within this square and who gave me the above information.
