Left image: 1/6 plate; Boy standing beside an elaborate studio chair with his hand resting on the seat, a painted backdrop behind, wearing a short knee-length shoulder-baring dress with a shallow yoked neckline in a patterned fabric with short sleeves, with short trowsers of cotton with scalloped edges beneath coming to below the knee, white stockings, and gaiters, which fasten with buttons at the outside. Right image: 1/6 plate; Boy standing beside an elaborate studio chair with his hand grasping a spindle on the back of the chair, a painted backdrop behind, wearing dark long trousers and a patterned long sleeved tunic with a white collar, white undersleeves, a bow tie and a belt with a large buckle, and gaiters, which fasten with buttons at the outside. Preservers: Straight and embossed with simple pattern (after 1850). Mats: Double elliptical, more ornate (1850s onwards). Case: Leather covered wood-frame embossed with a floral design on the front and a geometric design on the back, with eggplant purple pinchpads (1850s).
