A three-story brick mansion with ivy growing up one side. Next to the house is a gate and arch leading to a yard. Brick row homes also occupy the street.
Inscription:
Residence of Huizinga Messchert Esqr., No. 1222 Chestnut St. South side, built in 1814. Demolished in June 1867. Mr. Messchert removed to his country seat at Douglassville Berks Co. Penna. Died on Wednesday Feb'y 8th 1871 and buried in Ronaldsons Cemetery Philada. D.J. Kennedy. This House was built by Mr. Slaughton, Merchant, and afterwards occupied by Mr. Winthrop Sargent, Governor of the South Western Territory. (Front Bottom)
