David Kennedy watercolor depicting the residence of Mr. David Burns in Washington, D. C.  The painting is undated, but this collection spans Kennedy's active years between 1840-1890.
Inscription:
The Cottage of David Burns, Washington D.C. Situated a little back from the Potomac River on the square now lying between 17th and 18th streets, Mr. Burns was a Scotsman and in 1790 was Justice of the Peace and owner of all the land on which is now built the White House, the Treasury, the Observatory, the Patent Office, the Post Office, The Smithsonian, The Agricultural Buildings and the aristocratic Mansions of H.I and M streets, his daughter Maria inherited his property (the the Belle of Washington) and married the Hon. John VanNess of N. York. M.C she died in 1832 aged 50 honored and lamented a beautiful mausoleum is erected to her memory (Front bottom)
