Image Description:
Image: 1/9 plate; Seated man wearing jacket, vest and tie, with high collar, and striped pants, holding a top hat and something smaller (a cane?) on his lap. Preserver: Straight and embossed with simple pattern (after 1850). Mat: Nonpareil with matte finish (mid 1840s-mid 1850s). Case: Paper-covered wood-frame embossed with a geometric design [Similar to uncommon case design "The Tangent Circle" Plate 195 on page 157 of "American Miniature Case Art" by Floyd and Marion Rinhart (Cranbury, New Jersey: A. S. Barnes and Co., Inc., 1969)] and gilding in the interior, with a red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion with a geometric design (1850-60s).
