Image Description:
Image: 1/6 plate; Seated man resting arm on unseen object, with disheveled hair and modest muttonchop whiskers, wearing jacket with high collar and wide lapels, with dark vest, and white shirt, with stiff standing collar, and broad dark necktie. Plate: Silver-copper alloy; gold chloride toned Preserver: [none]. Mat: Oval with sandy finish (late 1840s). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a floral and geometric design both front and back, with a green velvet pinchpad, and a purple silk cushion (1839-40). Exhibition History: "Robert Cornelius: Portraits from the Dawn of Photography," mounted at the National Portrait Gallery and open to the public October 20, 1983 through January 22, 1984.
