Image Description:
Image: 1/6 plate; Seated woman with hair to bottom of ears, dressed in mourning, in a black dress with long fitted sleeves, and a small white collar, the baby dressed in a short-sleeved white dress with gold painted on at each shoulder, and a gold ring on his or her finger. Preserver: Straight, narrow, embossed with simple pattern (after 1850). Mat: Nonpariel with ornate matte finish (late 1850s onward). Case: Book style; papier mache with mother of pearl and hand painting of flowers and leaves, with a gilt patterned border on front only, with gilded pattern along edges of interior, red velvet pinchpad and red velvet cushion embossed with a geometric design.
