Image: 1/6 plate; Man seated in an elaborate posing chair, with arm resting on a cloth-covered posing table, with hair parted to one side, oiled and combed up in a wave at the center of the forehead, with a beard under the chin, wearing a black silk jacket with wide lapels and a high back collar, a black silk vest, a white shirt with a stiff standing collar and a wide black bowtie, and dark trousers, with one black leather glove on, and one hand bare. Preserver: Straight, narrow, embossed with simple pattern (after 1850). Mat: Oval with matte finish and simple embossed design (1850). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame with common "Throwing Flowers" design (Berg No. 4-46) embossed on both front and back, with a gilded patterned trim on both the exterior and interior edges, a red velvet pinchpad and a ruby red velvet cushion embossed with a floral design (ca.1850).
