Image: 1/6 plate; Seated man with arm resting on a cloth covered posing table piled with books, hair parted to one side and puffed at forehead, curls nearly covering ears, dressed in a dark unbuttoned jacket, dark trousers and a dark vest, with a white shirt with white turned down collar, large bow tie, a ring on his hand, a watch chain attached to the button hole of his vest and a strap coming down over the front of his vest underneath his jacket, color applied to his cheeks. Preserver: Fancier with inward points at the corners (after 1858). Mat: Oval with matte finish and simple embossed design (1850). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a geometric design both front and back, with gilded edge trim both exterior and interior, with a red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion embossed with a floral design (1850s).
