Image: 1/6 plate; Woman seated at posing table dressed in mourning dress with the bodice cut in a very low V to expose the chemisette clasped with a gold brooch, and a full bonnet, with a black silk ribbon around her neck, and two rings on her hand, holding a closed black fan in her hand, with color applied to face, and gold to the brooch and rings. Preserver: Straight, narrow, embossed with simple pattern (after 1850). Mat: Nonpariel with ornate matte finish (late 1850s onward). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with an uncommon "The Tangent Circle" design [Plate 195 page 157 of "American Miniature Case Art" by Floyd and Marion Rinhart (Cranbury, New Jersey: A. S. Barnes and Co., Inc., 1969)] both front and back, with gilded edge trim on both exterior and interior with a red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion embossed with a floral design (1850-60s).
Inscription:
(ink on paper): My great-grandfather's / 1/2 sister, Margaret / Mabon who married / Robert Hunter, who owned / a stable and rental / team of horses. (Enclosed note)
