Image: 1/6 plate; Seated woman with arm resting on a cloth covered posing table adorned with books, with hair parted in the center, wearing a sheer white daycap tied under her chin, and a long-sleeved black dress with gathers pulled very tightly and stitched to the waist-front panel, with white undersleeves and a whitework collar, color applied to her cheeks. Preserver: Straight and embossed with simple pattern (after 1850). Mat: Nonpariel with sandy finish (1840s). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a floral design both frotn and back, with a gilded interior edge trim, a red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion embossed with a geometric design (1850s).
Inscription:
(ink on paper): This is my great-great / grandmother, Mary Ann née / Rimmer, who emigrated from / Chester, England, about 1820. / Her son, John J. Miller b. / 1828 -- d. 1910, was my great- / grandfather, whom I remember. / He married Catherine heff in 1850 / John J. Miller was the son of his / mother's 2nd husband. He had a / 1/2 sister by her 1st husband--her / name Margaret Mabon (b. in England / d. Phila about 1887). [recto]; Her 3rd husband was / Samuel Joly, a British / sea captain. (Jolly?)
