Image Description:
Image: 1/4 plate; Standing man with hair parted to one side covering his ears, and a fringe of beard around the cheeks and jawline, dressed in a dark jacket with high collar and wide lapel, a dark vest, white button up shirt, and dark bow tie, arms crossed over his chest. Preserver: Fancier with inward points at the corners (after 1858). Mat: Octagonal with pebble finish (1839-mid 40s). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with "The Plain Octagon" design (Plate 218 on page 169 of "American Miniature Case Art" by Floyd and Marion Rinhart) on the front only, with eggplant purple velvet pinchpad, and rose red silk cushion (pre-1849).
