Image: 1/2 plate; Reproduction of a framed eighteenth century painting of a woman wearing a décolleté garment, with a sheer scarf over a light chemisette, a black shawl draped about her arms, wearing a sheer white cap over hair softly framing her face. Preserver: [none] (pre-1847). Mat: Octagonal with sandy finish (late 1840s). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame embossed with a floral design on the front only, with a plain (unembossed) back, with a purple velvet pinchpad and a plain (unembossed) purple silk cushion (1839-45).

Educated at the / Friends School in Philadelphia, and the Middle / Temple, London. Returned to Philadelphia in / January, 1783, and was admitted to the bar the / same year. Secretary of the Library Company of / Philadelphia, 1786-92; member of the General As- / sembly, 1789; U. S. district attorney, 1791-99; a / founder of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine / Arts, 1805; chancellor of the Law Association of / Philadelphia, 1827-36.
