Image: 1/4 plate; Seated woman with one arm wrapped around the girl's waist, hair parted in the center and covered with a white daycap, sheer white ribbons tied under her chin, wearing a dark dress with long cuffed sleeves, and a dark shawl over her shoulders, netted silk mitts on her hands; Standing girl with chin-length hair parted in the center and tucked behind her ears, wearing a short-sleeved dress made in a checked patterned fabric, with a wide neckline, cinched at the waist, a gilded bracelet on her arm; color applied to both their cheeks. Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s). Mat: Double elliptical with matte surface (mid 1840s - mid 1850s). Case: Leather-covered wood-frame half-case embossed with a floral design, with and exterior and interior gilded edge trim, and a red velvet pinchpad (ca. 1850).
