Image Description:
Image: 1/9 plate; Seated man with gray hair and a full white beard, wearing a dark jacket and vest, lighter pants, a white shirt, and a top hat, hands clasped at his waist, and color applied to his cheeks. Preserver: Fancier with inward points at the corners (after 1858). Mat: Nonpariel with matte finish (mid 1840s to mid 1850s). Case: Paper-covered wood frame embossed with a geometric design both front and back, with a red velvet pinchpad and a red velvet cushion embossed with the photographer's studio name and address (1850s).
