Image: 1/6 plate; Seated woman with young boy standing beside; woman with hair parted in the center and puffed out over the ears, wearing a dark dress buttoned up the front with long bishop sleeves with dark epaulettes and cuffs, and a dark flat collar with a brooch at her throat, one arm around the boy, the other hand in her lap holding a case or book, and spectacles; the boy, with curly hair parted on one side, wearing a dark jacket over a light shirt with a ruffled collar and a bow tie; ethnicity of sitters uncertain, color applied to both their cheeks. Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s). Mat: Nonpariel with matte finish (mid 1840s to mid 1850s). Case: Paper covered wood framed half case embossed with a geometric design on the back, with a red velvet pinchpad (1850-60s).
