Image: 1/4 plate; Head and shoulders of a man with hair parted on one side, with muttonchop whiskers, wearing a dark jacket and vest, a white shirt with upturned collar, and a dark bow tie. Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s). Mat: Oval with matte finish and simple embossed design (1850). Case: Leather covered wood frame embossed with a simple lined design on the front, with the photographer's studio name and address on the back, with a plum velvet pinchpad and a plain (unembossed) plum velvet cushion (1850s).
