Image: 1/6 plate; Man seated on elaborate carved wooden posing chair, with curly hair, muttonchop whiskers, wearing a dark jacket and vest, a white shirt with upturned collar, and a broad dark tie. Preserver: [none] (pre-1847). Mat: Oval with sandy finish (late 1840s). Case: Leather covered wood frame embossed with a floral design on the front and a geometric design on the back, with a red velvet pinchpad, and a red velvet cushion embossed with an eagle, scrollwork, and the photographer's name and address (ca.1850).
Inscription:
(printed on paper): #1 Thomas Sykes Earl (1794-1854), of Springfield Township, Burlington County, N.J. was descendent from Ralph Earl / who came to America from Devon, England in 1634.
