Image: 1/6 plate; Seated woman wearing a long sleeved black dress, black gloves, and a black bonnet set back on the head with some white ruffles around the face and black ribbons tied under the chin, a white collar, and white undersleeves, color applied to her cheeks and lips. Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s). Mat: Oval with matte finish and simple embossed design (1850). Case: Leather covered wood frame embossed with the uncommon "The Tangent Circle" motif [Plate 195 on page 157 of "American Miniature Case Art" by Floyd and Marion Rinhart (Cranbury, New Jersey: A. S. Barnes and Co., Inc., 1969)] on both the front and the back (ca. 1852).
