Image: 1/6 plate; Seated man with a receding hairline and beard wearing a dark jacket and vest, white shirt with wide dark tie, collar points turned down, and mid-toned gloves, color applied to his face.
Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s).
Mat: Oval with matte finish and simple embossed design (1850).
Case: Leather covered wood frame embossed with a common "Thistle Motif" on the front and back [Plate 119 on page 115 of "American Miniature Case Art" by Floyd and Marion Rinhart (Cranbury, New Jersey: A. S. Barnes and Co., Inc., 1969)], with an exterior and interior gilded edge trim, a red velvet pinchpad, and a red velvet cushion embossed with a scrollwork design (ca. 1850s).
Inscription:
(printed on paper): Isaac Collins III (1824-1902) born in New York moved with his family to Philadelphia when he was about 4. He / was the 7th child of Isaac Collins Jr. (one of the founders of Haverford College) and Margaret Morris. As an adult, Isaac III / may have lived at 1431 Filbert St.
