Image: 1/4 plate; Seated woman wearing a dark dress with long flared sleeves, a whitework collar and white undersleeves, a patterned shawl arranged about her arms, her hair parted in the center and falling in soft waves out over the ears, a gilded watch chain at her waist, a brooch at her throat, and color applied to her cheeks and lips.
Preserver: Straight but more ornate (1850s).
Mat: Oval with matte finish and simple embossed design (1850).
Case: Leather covered wood frame embossed with a floral design both front and back, with exterior and interior gilded edge trim, a red velvet pinchpad and a dark purple velvet cushion embossed with a floral design (1850s).
Inscription:
(printed on paper): Hannah Earl (1826-1905). 5th daughter of Thomas Sykes Earl. She did not marry.
