These documents were in the possession of  John Mitchell, agent for American Prisoners of War during the War of 1812. The papers include oaths that prisoners of war on Melville Island were required to sign before release from prison during the War of 1812.  In the oath, prisoners pledged to not take up arms against Britain for at least six months following their release.
