Inscription:
FORT MIFFLIN at the juncture of the Delaware and Schuylkill, stands as a monument to the heroic force of Continentals who fought off Admiral Howe’s Fleet seeking to land troops in Philadelphia in 1776. During the Civil War it was used as a prison for captured Confederates. Bridge on right leads to entrance of their subterranean dungeons.  Buildings surrounding the old fort are now used as storehouses by the U. S. Army Quartermaster Corps.  A newer fort, erected in 1855, nearby, houses munition magazines for the navy, guarded by a garrison of Marines.  Other historic spots in this area: “Cannonball Farm,” where a Revolutionary War projectile still sticks in the side of a house; Bannaker School (oldest public school, in Philadelphia); St. James of Kingsessing Church, built in 1760.  (Verso)
