Biography:
Born in Germantown, PA, became a private in the First Troop of Philadelphia City Cavalry (Rush's Lancers), serving in the Battles of Chancellorville, Gettysburg (serving as and aide to General Meade), and Todd's Tavern, where he as captured and brought to Libby Prison, a prisoner of war camp. He attempted escape from there twice, but was tracked by bloodhounds and brought back on both occasions.
Having moved to another prison in Columbia, South Carolina, and hearing of the approach of Sherman's Army, he and a few others stole away, hiding in cellars and attics until recued by Union troops. His health much compromised by these experiences, he eventually took a leave of absence and was honorably discharged in May, 1865. He married Anna Longstreth of Philadelphia and raised with her a son and a daughter until his death in 1891.
